What is the ruling on disobeying a mother who possesses no maternal instincts and cares only for money, and is not visiting her to alleviate her backbiting considered disobedience, knowing that the son loves his mother between himself and his Lord?

The right of the mother is immense, and showing her kindness is among the greatest causes for Allah's pleasure. Her right does not diminish, no matter her condition or shortcomings. Allah has commanded that even polytheist parents be accompanied with kindness. The child's love for his mother is not enough; rather, he must fulfill her right through kindness and care. It is not permissible to refrain from visiting her without a valid excuse. If the mother backbites, she should be advised gently, and it is permissible to avoid sitting with her only during the act of backbiting. However, if the intention is to alleviate her loneliness due to the absence of her husband or children, then visiting her and comforting her is a great act of righteousness.
