What is the ruling on listening to something where the instrument used is unknown—is it a daff or something else—and is it permissible to listen, giving precedence to the side of permissibility, or to turn away, giving precedence to the side of prohibition, especially with its widespread nature and the difficulty of avoiding it, and with parents commanding one to listen?

Listening to all musical instruments is forbidden, except for the duff (tambourine), based on the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "There will be people from my Ummah who will deem lawful illicit sexual intercourse, silk, alcoholic drinks, and musical instruments." If there is doubt between a duff and a drum, it is obligatory to avoid listening to it, acting upon the original principle, which is the prohibition of listening to musical instruments. Obedience to parents is obligatory in matters that do not involve disobedience to Allah, so it is not permissible to obey them in listening to something that might be a drum.
