How do we differentiate between mockery that expels one from the fold of Islam and jesting in matters of religion, and does one become an infidel by jesting without intending mockery?

The mockery that expels one from the faith is ridiculing and belittling religion and its rituals, whether done seriously or in jest. Whoever goes too far in jesting by uttering offensive words might reach the point of mocking acts of worship or religion, and this could lead to disbelief (kufr). So, whoever mocks the Qur’an or religious rulings is in grave danger and may exit Islam, because the verses of Allah and His Messenger are too great to be taken as a joke or jest. Scholars have explicitly stated that whoever utters a word of disbelief jokingly disbelieves, and must repent and renew his Islam. As for citing verses for events that have occurred, there is no harm in it, as the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, did. However, applying verses to something other than what Allah intended for them, combined with mockery and ridicule, is very dangerous. One must be extremely cautious about declaring Muslims disbelievers or thinking ill of them, and not to succumb to misgivings.
