What is the ruling on profiting from printing and selling religious books, whether they are books by the Salaf or by contemporary shaykhs who authored them for people to benefit from, not for profit?

Copyrights are protected by Islamic law. Printing and selling religious books is permissible due to its role in spreading knowledge and facilitating its circulation. There is no objection to printing any religious book unless its owners prohibit it, in which case their permission must be obtained, while observing trustworthiness and accuracy in publication. This applies whether the scholar authored it for profit or otherwise; it is permissible to print and profit from it unless he forbids it, in which case his permission or the permission of his heirs is required. It is stated in the fatwas of the Permanent Committee that it is permissible to record and sell beneficial tapes, and to photocopy and sell books, unless their owners prohibit it, in which case their permission is necessary.
