What is the interpretation of the verse: "And the record [of deeds] will be placed [before them], and you will see the criminals fearful of what is therein, and they will say, 'Oh, woe to us! What is this record that leaves neither a small thing nor a large thing except that it has enumerated it?' And they will find what they did present [before them]. And your Lord wrongs no one" (Al-Kahf)? And what is this Book? Does it record the deeds of every servant before their creation? Is the course of a person's life written on the forehead of the fetus? And in what is a human being given choice, and in what are they predestined?

The meaning of "the Book" in the verse: "And the Book shall be laid forth, and you will see the criminals, fearful of what is in it," is the record of a servant's deeds, in which every small and large action is recorded, and with which he will be confronted in the Hereafter. Allah ordained the destinies of creation fifty thousand years before the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the first thing He created was the Pen, commanding it to write the destinies of all things.

When the soul is breathed into the fetus, the angel is commanded to write four things: its provision, its lifespan, its deeds, and whether it will be wretched or happy. This includes marriage and the date of death.

As for whether a human being is compelled or given choice, he is both compelled and given choice. He is compelled in what he was created for, and he is given choice because he is endowed with intellect, hearing, and perception to distinguish between good and evil. As for the Book written when the soul is breathed in, it determines one's happiness and wretchedness, and everyone is facilitated towards what he was created for in terms of deeds.
