Is a mother obliged to pay her zakat on her money to her son or to other relatives if her husband is poor?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

If the child's father is poor, his maintenance becomes incumbent upon his mother, and it is not permissible for her to give him zakat from her wealth, because whoever is entitled to maintenance is forbidden from receiving zakat. As for relatives other than the child, such as paternal uncles and aunts, and maternal uncles and aunts, and their children, there is no harm in giving zakat to those among them who are deserving; in fact, they have more right to it. However, it is not obligatory to give zakat to a specific person among them.
