What is the intention that should be present when giving a gift to a friend?

Deeds are judged by intentions. Therefore, whoever intends to give a gift should do so seeking the countenance of Allah and His reward, for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Indeed, you will not spend any expenditure seeking the countenance of Allah except that you will be rewarded for it." And if the intention is merely to draw closer to the recipient and gain their affection, there is no harm in this intention, for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Give gifts to one another, and you will love one another."
