Does a divorce pronounced with the intention of threat take effect?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Your wife has become irrevocably divorced from you and is not lawful for you until she marries another husband, based on the Almighty's saying: (And if he has divorced her [for the third time], then she is not lawful to him afterward until she marries another husband). We advise controlling anger, for divorce is effective whether it is serious or in jest, and from one who intended to utter it, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "There are three matters, serious in which they are serious, and jesting in which they are serious," and he mentioned divorce among them. As for the divorce of an angry person, it depends on the intensity of the anger; if it reaches the point of losing consciousness, then the divorce does not occur. It is advisable to consult the Sharia court to rule on these matters.
