Is it considered a sin to stop seeking knowledge in an attempt to avoid developing an emotional attachment to other than God, and is that considered a solution for staying away from temptations?

Attachment to other than Allah is not always Shirk (definition). Shirk occurs if a servant loves other than Allah as much as he loves Allah. As for studying, there is no sin upon a Muslim if he abandons it, should he genuinely fear falling into temptation that leads him to forbidden acts. In fact, he must abandon it, even if his parents become angry. However, what appears from the questioner's situation is that he has not reached this stage, and the matter is nothing more than an exaggeration. Therefore, it is advised to continue studying and seek reward for pleasing parents, while avoiding interaction with girls, lowering one's gaze, and seeking help from Allah.
