How can a university student increase her religious knowledge under the guidance of her shaykh, by whom she was influenced and through whom she found guidance, while observing the Shariah controls? And how can she remain steadfast in her hijab and abandon listening to music in an uncommitted university and family environment?

It is permissible for her to learn from a شيخ (male scholar/teacher), provided she is cautious of forbidden acts such as khalwa (private seclusion with a non-mahram) and unrestricted gazing. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, used to teach women. If forbidden elements are present, it is not permissible, as it becomes a means to corruption. One's heart should be attached to Allah alone, for that is the requirement of the testimony "La ilaha illa Allah (There is no god but Allah)." Attachment to other than Allah diminishes Tawheed (monotheism). Be aware that few people tread the path of truth, so do not feel alienated if people turn away from you. The large number of those who perish and the small number of those who tread the right path should not harm you. "Islam began as something strange and will return as something strange as it began, so blessed are the strangers." You can find virtuous sisters who will help you in adhering to the truth.
