Is it considered a sound approach to compel students to limit their learning to memorizing the Qur’an without studying the rules of Tajwid and other sciences, and is preventing them from attending lessons with another shaykh to learn them something that is forbidden?

A teacher should not compel their students to study solely under them and prevent them from associating with other teachers. Such an act may stem from personal whims and a desire to monopolize students, which are signs of seeking prominence and leadership. A teacher should rejoice at the presence of other teachers and encourage students to benefit from them, just as Talha ibn Musarrif did. The claim that a student who disobeys their shaykh will not be granted success by Allah has no basis in Islamic law.
