What is the authenticity of the statements and narrations regarding Al-Hakam ibn Abi Al-Aas and his son Marwan, and what were their moral characteristics? And why did Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) allow Al-Hakam ibn Abi Al-Aas to return to Medina after the Prophet (peace be upon him) had banished him? Did Marwan ibn Al-Hakam betray Uthman? And are the hadiths narrated from the Prophet (peace be upon him) concerning the cursing of Banu Umayyah authentic?
Love for the Companions is obligatory. Al-Hakam ibn Abi al-'As was among those who embraced Islam during the Conquest of Mecca. The story of his exile to Ta'if is weak and not authentically established in the collections, and many scholars have questioned its authenticity. Even if it were proven, 'Uthman's bringing him back to Medina would not be considered a sin, because exile does not necessarily have to be permanent. Furthermore, 'Uthman interceded for 'Abdullah ibn Abi Sarh, and the Prophet accepted his intercession, so how could his intercession for Al-Hakam not be accepted?
As for Marwan ibn al-Hakam, it has not been proven that he betrayed 'Uthman, and no evil was known of him before the Fitna. Rather, he was among the jurists, and 'Uthman then Mu'awiya appointed him over Medina, and his conduct there was good.
None of the hadiths that condemn or curse the Umayyads are authentic.
