What is the ruling on facing away from the Qibla in the mosque, for someone other than the Imam, while leaning against the Qibli wall during the Friday sermon?
That which is prescribed for congregants during the Friday sermon is to face the preacher with their countenances and to listen attentively to the sermon. This is the practice of the people of knowledge and many Companions, and it is considered akin to a consensus. Some scholars have gone so far as to say that facing the preacher is obligatory. The purpose of this facing is to prepare oneself to hear the sermon and to observe proper etiquette with the preacher, which helps in understanding the admonition. Therefore, some congregants leaning against the qibli wall of the mosque during the sermon is contrary to the Sunnah and proper etiquette, and should not be done except out of necessity.
