Did God cause the Companions of the Cave to die and then resurrect them, or did they remain alive with their souls in them throughout their slumber?

The exegetes mentioned that the People of the Cave were overtaken by sleep for the duration of their stay in their cave, sleeping for many years, after which they were resurrected from their slumber.
