Is it permissible to go to a mosque to seek Islamic knowledge and pray therein if the father swore an oath of divorce upon the mother to prevent their son from going to it?
If the father has no valid reason for preventing his son from going to the mosque to seek knowledge, then obedience to him is not obligatory. This is because obedience to parents is conditioned by what benefits the parent and does not harm the child.
In this case, it is permissible to disobey the father, but it is not permissible for the child to cause his father to break an oath if that results in significant harm, such as divorce. Any act that causes a parent significant, not minor, harm is considered disobedience to parents.
We also advise seeking other ways to acquire knowledge, being keen to teach the father the correct creed, striving to influence him in the best manner, and seeking assistance through prayer.
