What is the ruling on falling short in maintaining ties of kinship with those who are abusive, especially those who deal in sorcery and magic? And what is the meaning of "gracious disengagement" (al-hajr al-jameel)?

Allah has commanded the joining of kin (Silat al-Rahim) and forbidden its severance. The Prophet (peace be upon him) enjoined us to maintain ties with those who cut us off, and the one who truly joins kin is he who maintains ties when they are severed. If it is established that your relatives practice sorcery, which is one of the seven destructive sins, then you must advise them and explain the danger of their action. However, this does not prevent you from maintaining ties with them to an extent that does not harm your religion or your worldly affairs. If they do not take heed and their boycott serves as a deterrent for them, then it is permissible to abandon them. Or, if it is highly probable that harm will result from them, then a graceful withdrawal (hajr jamil) is better than harmful association.
