Is it permissible to shake hands with women in Western countries if refraining from doing so would lead to misunderstanding or disapproval on their part?
A true Muslim takes pride in his religion and the Sunnah of his Prophet, and he elevates his creed above the manifestations of materialistic life, as Allah Almighty says: (And do not lose heart nor grieve, and you will be superior if you are believers). And whoever goes to the lands of the disbelievers for study must be confident in himself and his methodology, proud of Islam, and influence them through his adherence to the rituals of Islam and noble morals, not be influenced by them. It is not permissible for a Muslim's personality and identity to dissolve there, and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, warned against following the Jews and Christians in sins and transgressions. Therefore, it is not permissible for a Muslim to shake hands with foreign women, and he must be keen on Allah's pleasure and beware of concessions that lead to the loss of Islamic identity.
