What is the ruling on wearing a cross for a displaced person in necessity who uses a forged passport so as not to be suspected?
The cross is one of the symbols of disbelief (kufr), and it is forbidden for a Muslim to make it, acquire it, or wear it. One who does so may commit an act of disbelief (kufr), unless it is out of necessity.
Thus, if someone wears it under duress due to fear for their life from killing or imprisonment, there is no blame upon them, provided their heart is firm in faith. And if someone wears it out of ignorance, they are excused.
However, wearing it out of courtesy (mujamalah) is forbidden, and there is a fear that the one who does so may commit an act of disbelief, because it is an imitation of disbelievers. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Whoever imitates a people is one of them."
