What is the meaning of the Almighty's saying: (And due to them [the wives] is a similar [right] to what is expected of them, according to what is reasonable)?

The noble verse (And divorced women shall wait by themselves for three menstrual cycles...) clarifies the waiting period ('iddah) for a divorced woman who has been consummated with and experiences menstruation, and it warns against concealing what Allah has created in their wombs. The verse also grants the husband the right to take his wife back as long as her divorce has not become irrevocable. Furthermore, it establishes a great principle in marital life: (And due to them [the women] is similar to what is expected of them, according to what is reasonable), meaning that women have rights similar to the duties of men. However, this similarity is not absolute in every aspect. Rights and duties are divided into what both spouses are completely equal in, such as good companionship, and what is reciprocal, each according to their nature and divine law. The evidence for this is His saying, the Almighty: (And for men is a degree over them). The reference for determining these rights and duties is "what is reasonable" (al-ma'ruf), meaning what sound minds recognize and what conforms to Islamic law and the public interest. Islam has elevated the status of women and made them sisters of men, having rights similar to their duties.
