What is the origin of the word "tamattu‘" and its derivatives and meanings?

The origin of the word "tamattu'" (enjoyment/utilization) comes from "mata'" (goods/provisions), which signifies benefiting from something. "Mata'" refers to everything in this worldly life from which one can benefit.

Examples of this include: "tamattu'" (performing) Umrah (definition) before Hajj, which means benefiting from the days during which the performer of Umrah is released from the restrictions of Umrah before entering into the state of ihram (definition) for Hajj. Islam permitted this, whereas the Arabs previously did not consider performing Umrah during the months of Hajj.

Another example is the "mutah" (provision) for a divorced woman, as Allah Almighty says: "And provide for them, he who is of ample means according to his means, and he who is of limited means according to his means – a provision of good repute, a duty upon the doers of good."

Also from this is the hadith (definition) of Salamah ibn al-Akwa: "They said: 'O Messenger of Allah, if only you had allowed us to enjoy him' – meaning, left us to benefit from him."

From this meaning also comes Nikah (definition) al-Mutah (temporary marriage), which is marriage for a specified period. It was permissible in the early days of Islam then was prohibited.

The mention of "tamattu'" and "istimta" (enjoying/benefiting) in this sense has been repeated in the Quran and Sunnah (definition). The outcome is that the verb "tamattu" means: to benefit.
