What is meant by "the verse of Mut'ah"?

The term "Ayat al-Mut'ah" (verse of temporary marriage/enjoyment) refers to two verses: the first is the verse concerning Mut'ah of Hajj (temporary marriage for Hajj) in Surat al-Baqarah 196, and the second is the verse concerning the enjoyment (provision) for the divorced woman in Surat al-Baqarah 236. As for verse 24 of Surat an-Nisa, some scholars are of the view that it indicates Nikah (definition) al-Mut'ah (temporary marriage) and that its ruling was later abrogated, while meticulous scholars hold that it refers to a valid marriage contract, and the enjoyment here means absolute pleasure, and the "reward" is the dowry. Nikah al-Mut'ah was permissible at the beginning of Islam, then it was prohibited by the consensus of Muslims. Authentic hadiths have been narrated from the Prophet, peace be upon him, prohibiting it until the Day of Resurrection, and the Companions successively affirmed its prohibition, including Ali ibn Abi Talib and Aisha, may Allah be pleased with them both. As for Ibn Abbas, different statements have been narrated from him, but the most probable is that he retracted his view of its permissibility.
