Is the supplication for riding in a vehicle exclusively for travel and not prescribed for short trips, and was this view transmitted from the two Shaykhs, Ibn Baz and Ibn Uthaymeen?

Scholars have differed on the desirability of the riding supplication (du'a al-rukub). Some, like Sheikh Ibn Baz, restricted it to travel only, arguing that acts of worship are prescriptive (tawqifiyah). Others, like Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen, held the view that it is generally desirable, whether for travel or for residence, citing the apparent meaning of the Qur'an and Sunnah as evidence.

The Kuwaiti Fiqh Encyclopedia states that it is desirable to say "Allahu Akbar" (God is Greatest) and then recite: "Glory be to Him Who has subjected this to us, and we ourselves were not capable of achieving it. And surely to Our Lord we are returning," upon mounting any conveyance generally. If the riding is for travel, then it is sunnah to recite the supplication transmitted from the Prophet (peace be upon him), such as: "O Allah, we ask You in this journey of ours for righteousness and piety, and for deeds that please You."
