Is it permissible to place a gold screw in a molar to stabilize it?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

The default ruling is that it is impermissible for men to use gold, except out of necessity. So, if a specialized doctor determines that a tooth can only be treated with gold, then there is no harm in it. However, if it is possible to use another material besides gold, then it is not permissible to use gold. The jurists have permitted the use of gold for a nose or a tooth out of necessity, citing as evidence the story of Arfajah ibn As'ad (may Allah be pleased with him), who was instructed to replace his nose with gold after his silver nose had deteriorated.
