Its use for pain relief is permissible. However, its use as a treatment for organic or psychological illnesses requires further consideration due to the lack of scientific evidence of its efficacy. A condition for its use is that a man should not perform it on a non-mahram (definition) woman or vice-versa; rather, it should be between women and women or men and men, without exposing awrah (private parts) or causing fitnah (temptation/strife).
