How is drug addiction treated from an Islamic perspective?

Islam addresses the issue of intoxicants by prohibiting their consumption and imposing strict penalties on those who partake in them. Allah has forbidden them in the Holy Quran, stating: "O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone altars [to other than Allah], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may succeed." The Sunnah further emphasized the prohibition of all intoxicants and warned the alcoholic that they would be deprived of it in the Hereafter. As for the punishment, the Prophet, peace be upon him, inflicted lashes with palm branches and sandals, Abu Bakr administered forty lashes, and Umar increased it to eighty lashes.
