What is the ruling on taking drugs such as opium, heroin, and hashish, and are they forbidden, with evidence from the Quran?

The mind is one of Allah's greatest blessings, and it must be preserved. Narcotics corrupt the mind and are forbidden by Islamic law because they are among the impure things (khaba'ith) and not among the good things (tayyibat). It is permissible to use some narcotics for severe need or necessity, such as anesthesia in surgical operations, provided that Islamic regulations are adhered to. Anything beyond what is needed is forbidden.
