Would a son be considered disobedient to his father if his father is upset and does not ask about him, despite the son's attempts to communicate, and would Allah punish him for that?

The son does not have the right to abandon his father, no matter the father's condition or ill-treatment. Rather, he must draw near to him, seek his رضا (contentment), and apologize to him. For honoring one's parents and accompanying them with kindness is among the most obligatory duties, as stated in the Almighty’s saying: "And We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents..." and "And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment..." The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, also warned against disobedience to parents by saying: "May his nose be rubbed in the dust... whoever reaches old age with his parents, one or both of them, and does not enter Paradise." Therefore, reciprocating the father's actions with estrangement makes the son disobedient, and he must take the initiative to appease his father, draw closer to him, and humble himself before him, no matter how harsh he may be.
