Is it permissible to gather dry wood from abandoned orchards?

If orchards are abandoned by their owner, there is no harm in gathering dry firewood from them and benefiting from it, according to Ibn Qudamah, who said: "Whoever precedes to something permissible, such as hunting, ambergris, firewood, fruits, and what people cast off due to their disinterest in it, then he has more right to it."
