Is it permissible for a woman to uncover anything other than what is between the navel and the knee in front of Muslim women? What is the evidence for this? The basic rule for determining the awrah (intimate parts) of a Muslim woman in front of other Muslim women is the area between the navel and the knee, and she may expose anything other than that. This is the view of the majority of scholars, but it is conditioned upon not leading to falling into what Allah has forbidden. For what is necessary to fulfill an obligation is itself an obligation, and wearing clothes at parties in a way that makes one a bad example is forbidden due to the corruption it leads to. A thing may be permissible in itself, but if it leads to something forbidden, it becomes forbidden due to its consequences. Modesty is the most precious thing a woman possesses, and if she loses it, then everything else is on its way to being lost, based on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "Indeed, among what people have attained from the words of prophethood is: If you feel no shame, then do as you wish," and his saying: "Leave him, for modesty is part of faith."
