Why did the conclusion of Jesus' (peace be upon him) supplication in Surat Al-Ma'idah—"If You punish them, then indeed they are Your servants; and if You forgive them, then indeed it is You who are the Exalted in Might, the Wise" (5:118)—differ from the conclusion of Abraham's (peace be upon him) supplication in Surat Ibrahim—"And whoever disobeys me—then indeed, You are Forgiving and Merciful" (14:36)? And why did Abraham make this supplication for the disbelievers?

The reason for the difference in style between the two verses concerning Jesus and Abraham, peace be upon them, is the difference in context. The statement of Jesus, peace be upon him, was in the Hereafter, in a context of grandeur, majesty, and retribution against those who associated partners with him. Therefore, the mention of might and wisdom was more fitting for the context, because if forgiveness were to occur, it would stem from perfect power, knowledge, and wisdom that places all things in their proper places.

As for the statement of Abraham, peace be upon him, it was in this world, in a context of supplication and prayer for guidance and a return from polytheism. Hence, the mention of the Oft-Forgiving, the Most Merciful, which suits the context of supplication and mercy.
