Is it permissible to engrave the names and death dates of Christians to be placed on their graves?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Writing on a Muslim's grave is prohibited, based on the hadith narrated by Jabir ibn Abdullah: "The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade that anything be written on the grave." This is the view of Shafi'i, Malik, Ahmad, Dawud, and the majority of scholars. Engraving and writing on the grave are also disliked by the Hanafis. Writing becomes undoubtedly forbidden if it is associated with symbols of disbelief, such as a cross, or with false eulogizing phrases.
