The question

I was engaged to someone I loved and who loved me, but his father rejected me. Our relationship developed to the point where we were like a married couple. Now, his father forced him to break off the engagement, and he is hesitant between holding onto me and his sick father, who was hospitalized because of me. He feels guilty and faces blame from his relatives, and we are at a loss.

The answer

All praise is due to Allah. If the relationship was merely an engagement without a legitimate marriage contract, then you have committed a grave sin. If conjugal relations occurred, then this is the crime of zina (unlawful sexual intercourse), and what is obligatory is sincere repentance and severing the relationship. Marriage after that is permissible under two conditions: repentance and istibra' (ensuring no pregnancy). However, if the father is harmed by this marriage and cannot be convinced, then the son must obey his father and abandon the marriage. In this case, the relationship must be severed, and perhaps Allah will provide each of you with a righteous spouse other than the other.
