What should I do about the presence of pictures, statues, decorated vessels, and wine cups for decoration in a house I rented, and is it permissible for them to remain there, and does the entry of angels into the house get affected by their presence?
The general rule is that it is impermissible to hang pictures of living beings or place their statues in homes, and they must be removed because the Prophet (peace be upon him) forbade it, and because angels do not enter a house that contains such pictures, and those who make them will be among the most severely punished people on the Day of Resurrection.
However, if removing the pictures and statues would lead to a greater harm than their retention, then direct removal by hand is waived. In this case, it is preferable to ask the apartment owner to remove them, or to hide them in a box or similar container.
It is preferable not to rent an apartment that contains statues. Scholars have differed regarding the ruling on staying in a house that has impermissible pictures of animals, and the closer opinion is that it is permissible, though the entry of angels is disliked.
