Is it permissible not to place medical devices on a girl suffering from an incurable and hopeless disease, to avoid torturing her, based on a fatwa attributed to Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen allowing the removal of devices from a patient whose recovery is not expected?

It is not permissible to disconnect the machines from the patient unless her death has been confirmed. The basic principle is to pursue means of treatment and seek healing. Some scholars permit withholding resuscitation from a patient whose life is despaired of, if reliable doctors confirm this. This applies in specific cases, including: if the patient arrives deceased, or if her condition is unsuitable for resuscitation according to the report of three specialized doctors, or if her illness is incurable and death is certain, or if the patient is in a state of disability or mental inertia with a chronic illness, advanced cancer, or chronic heart and lung diseases with repeated cardiac and respiratory arrest, or if there is irreparable brain damage. In these cases, there is no need to use resuscitation machines, and the opinion of the patient's guardians regarding the placement or removal of the machines is not considered, as this is not within their expertise. An ordinary person should follow the fatwa of a scholar whom he trusts.
