Is it permissible for parents to reject a suitor for their daughter merely because he is a foreigner of unknown origins, or because he was born outside wedlock, taking into account that they have affirmed his good character and religiosity?

Religion and character are the legitimate foundations for choosing spouses. If someone whose religion and character are pleasing proposes, then he should be married. The fact that a young man comes from two disbelieving parents does not necessarily mean he is illegitimate. He might be legitimately attributed to them if the husband believed his marriage was permissible. Even if he were illegitimate, that is not a religious impediment to marrying him. However, it is preferable to marry someone of good lineage and family. It is an act of righteousness to obey one's parents and refrain from marrying someone like him. If the marriage does not take place, it is not permissible for the girl to have a relationship with the young man, because he is a stranger to her.
