When is a father permitted to reject a suitor for his daughter, what are the legitimate and illegitimate reasons for doing so, is a father who rejects a suitor without legitimate reasons considered unjust, and is it sufficient for approval to consider only the suitor's character, religiosity, and ability to provide?

The standard of compatibility in Islam is religious commitment and good character, as evidenced by the saying of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace: "If someone whose religious commitment and character you approve of proposes to your daughter, then marry her to him; otherwise, there will be tribulation on earth and widespread corruption." Some scholars believe that lineage is a criterion, but the more preponderant view is not to consider it. The guardian has the right to refuse a suitor for marriage if his religious commitment and character are not satisfactory, but he does not have the right to refuse for any other reason. If a guardian prevents his ward from marrying a compatible suitor, he is disobedient and in violation of the saying of Allah the Almighty: "So do not prevent them from marrying their husbands when they agree among themselves in a lawful manner."
