What is the expiation for one who swore not to interrupt prayer but repeatedly broke that oath, and what is the monetary value of the expiation for an oath in Syria for this year, and is it obligatory to sell gold to pay it when unable to ask the husband for money? And what is the expiation for one who made a covenant with Allah to abandon certain matters but then committed them, and does not remember the number of times?

If a person suffering from obsessive-compulsive disorder (waswasah) swears an oath or makes a covenant with Allah under the influence of this waswasah, or breaks it, then nothing is binding upon him, because he is in the position of one who is coerced. However, if the oaths and their breaking occurred by your choice, then you must offer expiation (kaffarah). This expiation is feeding ten poor persons for each day, or clothing them. If you are unable to do so, then you must fast for three days for each oath and covenant that you broke. The expiation is binding upon you, not your husband. If you have gold that exceeds your usual needs, you are required to offer the expiation by feeding the poor; otherwise, you may resort to fasting. If you do not know the number of oaths, then investigate and offer expiation for what you believe is most likely to clear your conscience.
