The answer

It is obligatory to follow the Imam in omitting sunnah (recommended) acts whose performance would disrupt the following of the Imam, such as the prostration of recitation (sujud al-tilawah) and the first tashahhud. As for sunnah acts whose performance does not entail disrupting the following of the Imam, it is permissible to perform them, such as the sitting for rest (jalsat al-istiraha), raising the hands, and the opening supplication (du'a al-istiftah). The Imam's omission of some sunnah acts does not necessitate accusing him of sin or innovation.
