What is the Muslim's stance regarding scholarly disagreement?

The stance of a Muslim when scholars differ jurisprudentially is to adopt the opinion supported by the strongest evidence, if he is qualified to examine the evidence. Otherwise, he must follow the opinion that adheres most closely to the Sunnah and is from the most knowledgeable, pious, and God-ffearing scholar.
