Can repeated dreams in the Haram al-Makki, after performing Istikhara and supplicating to Allah for a clear vision, be considered a result of that Istikhara, or are they merely confused dreams? Is it permissible to reject a suitor despite these dreams, and would that be considered a contravention of the Istikhara?

What is relied upon in Istikhara (guidance-seeking prayer) is what occurs after it. If the person is granted success in completing what they intended, then there was good in it. If it is not completed, then the good was in diverting it away from them. One can find reassurance in a dream. However, if the girl is not pleased with marrying the young man, then the good lies in her not marrying him, and this is not considered a violation of the Istikhara's implication. Istikhara is recommended, not obligatory. In addition to Istikhara, consultation regarding the suitor is recommended, as is asking trustworthy people about his religious commitment and character, with an emphasis on his adherence to obligatory duties and avoidance of grave sins. If trustworthy people praise him, then the girl should accept him; otherwise, she should leave him and ask Allah for a righteous husband. It is permissible for her to offer herself to righteous men whom she desires to marry, while observing the Sharia-compliant guidelines.
