How can one get rid of the obsessive thought of imagining shapes when uttering the majestic word "Allah"? Is ignoring it an effective cure for this condition despite its severity and impact on prayer? Is it permissible to ignore it without spitting to the left three times? Is it permissible to imagine the majestic word written or to imagine reading the Qur'an from a Mushaf during prayer?
The treatment for obsessive thoughts (waswas) is to ignore them, turn away from them, and pay them no heed. Continuing this disregard is the most effective treatment. These obsessive thoughts do not cause harm as long as the person experiencing them dislikes them and exonerates Allah from any imperfection. Disliking these obsessive thoughts is proof of sincere faith. When obsessive thoughts present themselves, one should ignore them, seek refuge in Allah, and spit lightly to one's left three times. Imagining verses as if written in a Mus'haf does no harm and does not affect the validity of the prayer. One must continue to resist these obsessive thoughts until complete recovery.
