What should we do for a fetus if it is miscarried: should we pray over it, wash it, and name it, or leave it unnamed?

A fetus is washed and prayed over if it is born alive, cries out, and then dies. This is a consensus among scholars. If it does not cry out but has passed four months of gestation, it is also washed and prayed over. Imam Ahmad justified this by stating that the prayer is a supplication for the fetus and its parents. However, if it has not reached four months, it is neither washed nor prayed over; instead, it is wrapped in a cloth and buried, because the soul has not yet been breathed into it. The miscarried fetus is given a name that suits both male and female, if its gender is not apparent.
