Is zakat obligatory on the amount from the sale of a piece of land that was invested in purchasing another agricultural land?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

If you bought the land with the intention of possessing it and benefiting from it, then there is no zakat due on its sale price until a year has passed since the sale and the nisab (minimum threshold) is met. However, if you bought it with the intention of selling it when its price increases, then zakat is due on it for all the previous years, because it is considered a trade commodity. It must be evaluated annually, and one-quarter of one-tenth (2.5%) of its value must be paid as zakat.
