Is it obligatory to make up for missed fasting days before the next Ramadan, or is it permissible to make them up after Ramadan?

The jurists differed regarding making up for missed Ramadan fasts, whether it is obligatory to make them up before the next Ramadan or if it is permissible to delay them. The majority of scholars are of the view that it is obligatory to make them up before the next Ramadan, and whoever delays them without a valid excuse is sinful. They based their argument on the narration of Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her). Conversely, the Hanafis held the view that it is permissible to delay making up the fasts absolutely, and there is no sin in doing so.
