Zakat is obligatory on the fruits of date palms in homes if they reach the nisab, based on the Almighty's saying: "O you who have believed, spend from the good things which you have earned and from that which We have produced for you from the earth." The nisab is five wasqs, which is 612 kilograms of dates, estimated by the weight of good wheat. The amount of zakat is half of a tenth if irrigated with water drawn with effort, based on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "And in what is irrigated by effort, half of a tenth." There is no zakat on palm saplings unless they are sold and their price has been held for a full year. There is no zakat on date palms planted for selling their saplings or their fruits. Zakat is to be paid from the value of the sold fruit, and fresh dates of medium quality for what is eaten if it is abundant, and dried dates for the rest until they become dried.
