The answer

Whoever performs ablution (wudu') or a full ritual bath () with the intention of making prayer permissible (istibahat as-salat) or lifting ritual impurity (raf' al-), that suffices him, and his ablution or ghusl is valid. Intention () involves purposing to remove ritual impurity, or to make prayer permissible, or the intention of purification for performing an act that is not permissible without purity, such as touching the Qur'an. The jurists differed on whether intention is an obligatory act (fard) or a recommended act () in ghusl. The Malikis, Shafi'is, and Hanbalis held that it is obligatory, while the Hanafis held that it is recommended.
