To what extent is it true that exaggerating the ghunnah before the Isti'la (elevated) letters is considered a mandatory performance among the Mashariqah (Eastern reciters) due to their belief that the ghunnah follows the letter after it? And are there differences in Qira'at (recitations) between the Mashariqah and the Magharibah (Western reciters)?

This issue is disputed among contemporary reciters, and we have found no mention of it by earlier scholars. The disagreement is not only between the East and West, but even among the people of the East there is disagreement. Many reciters in the Indian subcontinent do not approve of the opinion that ghunnah should be emphasized (tafkhim), and among the most prominent of these is Sheikh Muhammad Tahir Al-Rahimi Al-Madani. As for the reciters in Egypt and the Levant: they uphold it and teach it, and there should be no denunciation regarding it.
