What are the conditions for Imamate in prayer and Imamate in governance, and is it permissible to relinquish them?

If the ruler feels incapable of fulfilling the burdens of governance, it is obligatory for him to abdicate. However, if there is no such reason, there is a difference of opinion among scholars regarding the permissibility of him deposing himself. Some scholars permit it, citing Abu Bakr's statement: "Relieve me! Relieve me!" Others forbid it, arguing that he has undertaken the rights of the Muslims. If the deposition is due to a necessity, such as quelling a sedition or incapacity, there is no disagreement on its permissibility.
