Is it permissible to work as a police officer in the Customs Police Force Presidency, taking into account the legitimate fatwas that permit the imposition of customs duties?

The fundamental principle regarding customs duties imposed on Muslims is that they are considered forbidden tolls (mukuus), which fall under the category of unjustly consuming people's wealth. Severe warnings have been reported concerning them, such as the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "The collector of mukuus will not enter Paradise," and his saying regarding the woman from Ghamid: "By Him in whose hand is my soul, she has repented a repentance that if a collector of mukuus were to repent it, he would be forgiven."

Scholars have unanimously agreed that mukuus imposed on roads, city gates, and markets are a great injustice, forbidden, and an act of transgression. Some have made exceptions for what is taken as zakat, or from people of war and dhimma. Some even went as far as to consider one who deems mukuus permissible as a disbeliever.

Some scholars permitted their collection for the public good if there was insufficient funds in the public treasury. Based on this, it is not permissible to work in collecting forbidden customs duties or to assist in their collection, in accordance with the Almighty's saying: "And do not cooperate in sin and aggression," unless one's intention is to remove or alleviate injustice, or if trusted scholars have issued a fatwa permitting them due to the country's need and provided that their collection does not involve aggression.

Whoever is in doubt regarding this matter should avoid doubtful things. And whoever abandons something out of fear of Allah, Allah will compensate him with something better.
