What is the expiation for a husband's saying to his wife, in a moment of anger, "I will take you to your family, but you will not return to your home," when at that moment he intended to marry another woman or to divorce her? And was his oath intended for the day she wished to go? And is there any problem if he takes her the following week?

Suspending a divorce using an ambiguous term (kinayah) does not effectuate a divorce unless the husband intended it. If the husband doubts his intention, the divorce does not occur, because the original state is the continuation of the marriage. If doubt arises concerning a divorce or its condition, then it is based on the certainty of the marriage. The husband is not required to do anything if he doubts the divorce or doubts the condition upon which the divorce was suspended. There is no harm for the wife in permitting her husband to visit her family.
